Overview
The harbour of Kali Limenes lies at a distance of 77 km on the south coast of Crete. Driving in this part of the island is adventurous, as the roads are usually unpaved, however, the scenery is fascinating with high hills, precipitous cliffs along the coastline, isolated coves and sandy beaches.
Leaving Lendas to the west, an unpaved road along the coast leads to Kali Limenes (12km). Kali Limenes can also be reached from Faistos. Gortyn';s main harbour, Kali Limenes, is the place where St Paul landed on his way to Rome and brought Christianity to Greece. Nowadays, Kali Limenes is a major port for oil tankers. However, it has long quiet beaches, some good taverns and cafes. Its mild climate even during winter allows swallows to stay in the area throughout the year instead of migrating to Africa. East of the village and opposite of the islet Trafos, are the remains of the ancient Lassaea. The ruins are spread from the coast all the way up to the hill. There are some Minoan vaulted tombs, as well as Roman ruins for you to see. An interesting place to visit while being in Kali Limenes is the Moni Odigitrias, only 6 km north of the village.
