Fodele situated 29 km west of Heraklion is a charming village, birthplace of the famous Mannerist painter Domenikos Theotokopoulos, also known as ‘El Greco";.
The village of Fodele, There are two beaches near Fodele: The first one is located near the national road and offers some tourist facilities, with a big hotel, restaurants, cafe etc. The other one is situated a little to the west, accessible only from the village.
Archaeologists identify the bay at Fodele with ancient Astali, the port of the ancient city of Axos.

Fodele is said to be the birthplace of the famous Mannerist painter Domenicos Theotokopoulos, alias ";El Greco"; in 1545.
At the settlement Archondika, one km northwest of the village, are the ruins of an old Byzantine chapel dedicated to the Presentation of The Virgin Mary. It is believed that this chapel had inspired El Greco to express his religious feelings through his painting.
At the settlement of Archondika there is a Museum dedicated to El Greco where visitors can see replicas of the painter';s work.
