Overview

Avgeniki is a small village of 812 people. It belongs to the Municipality of Paliani Malevisiou. It is one of the oldest villages in Crete, populated since the Venetian domination.
It is believed that the name of the village derives from the word ";Evgeniki";, which means ";noble";, as many nobles inhabited the region since the Venetian occupation. According to another theory, the village was named after its first resident, a woman called Evgenia. The main occupation of its inhabitants is the production of grape, grapes and olive oil. You will find 13 churches in the village; one of them is the Byzantine church of the Archangel Michael, with marvelous frescos and icons.
